FAQ

WHEN WILL THE MOVIE BE AVAILABLE TO BUY?

Available now

WHAT FORMAT IS THE MOVIE IN?

The movie is in side by side (parallel) format and anaglyph (either on DVD or as AVI on data disc).

DO I NEED A NEW 3D TV TO WATCH THIS MOVIE IN 3D?

No. The movie can be output to anaglyph (red/cyan) 3D with the freeware player StereoMovie Maker and so can be viewed on any screen attached to the PC.

CAN I PLAY THIS MOVIE ON A DVD PLAYER AND WATCH IT ON A NORMAL TV?

Yes. The 3D DVD (anaglyph version) should play on your DVD player and output to any display. There is also an avi data disc (anaglyph version) that might play too. PLEASE NOTE: I cannot confirm that the  DVD will work on every single DVD player. I have tested it on a Samsung E2350 and HD-850 DVD player and the 3D DVD works on both. As a last resort though, if it doesn't play on your DVD player, it can still be played on a PC.

CAN I WATCH THE MOVIE USING MY 3D TV OR 3D CAPABLE MONITOR?

If you have stereoscopic software like Stereoscopic player and can already play side by side AVI clips succesfully then you should be OK.  If you don't have this software, you can use the freeware player StereMovie Maker (see download link) which can output to different 3D formats like interlaced and anaglyph instead. Certain graphics cards might also be able to make use of the page flip output in StereoMovie Maker. It can be set to Win3D, nVidia and Open GL in some cases. The film looks at its best using page flip (frame sequential) mode, to a DLP projector or other 3D capable display.

With regards 3D TVs, it is up to you to make sure what format it accepts or whether you can convert the side by side avi file to play on it. As I don't own a 3D TV, I can't really be of much more help. The film is primarily to be played on a PC and output to a 3D capable display (like a 3D monitor or 3D capable projector). 3D TVs are a different technology altogether so please check first.

CAN I WATCH THE SIDE BY SIDE VERSION USING THE RED/CYAN GLASSES THAT CAME WITH MY 3D DVDS?

Yes. In your Stereoscopic Player, you just need to set the output to grey anaglyph (red/cyan).
Alternatively, you could buy the anaglyph version instead.

Please note: The Red/Cyan 3D glasses from the following 3D DVDs have been tested and are all working.

Sharkboy and Lava Girl 3D
Fly Me to the Moon 3D
Friday the 13th Part 3 3D
Sea Monsters 3D
Shrek 3D
Final Destination 3D
Call of the Wild 3D
Santa vs. the Snowman 3D

WHAT IS THE PICTURE QUALITY AND SOUND LIKE?

I have used the public domain version of the film for this conversion. Please click on the Internet Archive Download Link to see the version that has been used.

WHAT IS THE 3D EFFECT LIKE?

The movie has a very nice 3D depth of field which very often looks like a native stereoscopic movie. The 3D is to do with depth rather than of the pop out type.

I PREFER MORE 3D DEPTH. IS THERE ANY WAY TO INCREASE IT?

Yes. You can open the movie in Stereoscopic viewer or StereoMovie Maker and adjust the parallax (vertical alignment). I have tested this and lowering the resolution anywhere from 640 x 480 to 600 x 480  will create a wider depth but it will also increase ghosting and cause eye fatigue. If the movie runs slow in StereoMovie Maker while trying this, cut the movie into shorter sections and it should run smoothly. If it doesn't then your computer isn't powerful enough.

ARE THERE ANY ANOMALIES WITH THE CONVERTED 3D IMAGE?

Occasionally a slight warping effect can be seen on moving objects within a scene. Also, a light mask or slight blurriness is sometimes evident around people. These anomalies are to do with limitations of the software used, coupled with the fact that a few short cuts have been taken during the conversion process. The main short cut being that to save time, a depth map was created for 1 in 10 frames as opposed to every single frame of the movie. Therefore, because the depth maps are occasionally out of sync with the 2D image, warping and blurring is evident in some scenes.  Without taking these short cuts, it would have been impossible for me to complete the conversion though.  As things stand, it has still taken 10 months. Fortunately, these anomalies are few and far between and overall do not spoil the enjoyment of the film and its 3D effect.

HOW DO I BUY AND DOWNLOAD THE MOVIE?

You can buy it now by clicking on the "Buy Now" page. You can read more information about the versions available and then use the PayPal "Buy Now" button. If you buy the side by side downloadable version, on receipt of payment, you will be sent an invitation to my private Digital Vault where you will be able to download the movie. While waiting for the invite, please make sure that it hasn't been sent to your SPAM folder. If you buy one of the anaglyph versions, I will post out the DVD or AVI version on receipt of payment.

HOW LONG WILL I HAVE TO DOWNLOAD THE MOVIE?

The download link will be available for approximately 48 hours. Please make sure that you download the film within that time frame. Do not order the movie if you know that you will be on holiday or away for a few days before receiving the invitiation.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I MISS THE INITIAL DOWNLOAD DEADLINE?

If this happens, you will be given a second opportunity to download the movie but the download time will be restricted for between 12-24 hours. You must download it successfully this time, otherwise you forfeit the right to access the movie.

ARE THERE OTHER VERSIONS OF THE MOVIE AVAILABLE TO BUY?

Yes. I have the movie in both side by side and anaglyph format available to buy on data disc. You can either bid for them or buy them on eBay (see my front page link) or you can order them here or by E-Mailing me (see my profile). The disc versions contain the following extra features...3D Trailer, 3D stills gallery, samples of depth maps and storyboards (including two exclusive scenes of animated depth map to final 3D scene comparisons).

WILL THE MOVIE HAVE THE 2D23DCONVERSIONS DOG (LOGO) ON THE SCREEN?

No. The logo is only used on demo clips and will not appear on the final purchased movie.

HOW MUCH WILL THE MOVIE COST?

£9.99

I felt that overall, this is a reasonable price considering the amount of work that has gone into converting the film. The whole idea of this project was to create a decent 3D movie that would be affordable and viewable to anyone interested in it.

HOW LONG HAS CARNIVAL OF SOULS TAKEN TO CONVERT ?

The conversion process has taken 10 months. Originally, it was estimated that it would only be 6 months but this is my first conversion and the whole process has been a learning curve for me.  After 6 months of converting, the second half of the movie was looking very good as by then, I had developed a technique that worked very well. Unfortunately though, in comparison, the first half didn't look too great and so I decided to re-convert the entire first half of the movie in order to make it look as good.

ARE YOU A PROFESSIONALLY PAID GRAPHIC ARTIST?

No. I am just a 3D fan with an Art Degree. So far, no payment has been received for any of the work done. The owner and creator will be relying solely on any purchases of the movie for payment towards the conversion process.

DO YOU HAVE PLANS FOR ANY FUTURE CONVERSIONS?

Yes, i am currently working on converting "House on Haunted Hill". This conversion should take around 6-9 months and so should be available to buy in the second half of 2011. I am already getting excited about the potential of this future conversion. The movie has lots of open coridoor and basement shots which would be perfect for a 3D conversion. I have lots of ideas already on how I will approach the conversion and would like to make it look as full of depth as the studio and museum shots in "House of Wax".

CARNIVAL OF SOULS IS A PUBLIC DOMAIN MOVIE. DOES THIS MEAN THAT CARNIVAL OF SOULS 3D IS PUBLIC DOMAIN TOO?

No. This is an exclusively converted 3D version of the movie and the copyright is held solely by the creator and owner.
